St Petersburg

We're about to leave the wonderful city of St Petersburg to head back to London after a hectic couple of weeks. Last night's concert in the Grand Philharmonic Hall was amazing. I always love performing in these historical music halls. You can't help being aware of the incredible roster of musicians who have been on the platform. I was told that Richard Wagner came to give a series of concerts of his own music, and the resulting fee was enough to buy a house on his return to Germany. Debussy also gave concerts here, along with the greats of Russia's musical heritage. Shostakovich's Leningrad Symphony was performed in the hall during the siege in 1942 to a sell-out audience, with the concert relayed through speakers around the city, and even directed towards the German army. Today the city is a sophisticated cultural and commercial centre, but there is still an enthusiastic audience for live music. We were humbled by the reaction to our concert, and can't wait to return here. For now, we have a few days at home to prepare for the next concerts, starting with a private concert in the UK on Friday, with a trip to Finland the following week. It's never dull, even if the weather here in Russia (and back in the UK. I think) is a bit grey.
