It's lovely to be enjoying the warm California sunshine in February. It's also lovely to be visiting some more great venues on this trip. Yesterday we performed in the chapel of the University of Redlands, a private liberal arts college to the east of Los Angeless. In the morning we worked with two of the university's choir, the mixed voice Chapel Singers, directed by Dr Nicholle Andrews, and a female voice group, Bel Canto, conducted by Joe Modica. This was singing at a very high level. Our own concert, which took place at the highly civilised time of 3pm, had a very large and enthusiastic crowd. After the concert some of us failed to make it into the church's foyer to meet the audience. We found ourselves chatting to people just outside the building, taking advantage of the late afternoon sunshine, which made the sandstone Chapel look particularly lovely. In the evening we were hosted to dinner by the university's President, Dr Ralph Kuncl. Alongside his distinguished medical career, Dr Kuncl was for many years a member of Baltimore Choral Arts, a fine chamber choir directed by Tom Hall, with whom the KS have shared a platform on a number of occasions. We were reminiscing about the premiere of Libby Larsen's Billy the Kid, which we both sang in. That was the first piece we had from Libby. In 2000 she wrote her Four Valentines for the KS, the first movement of which was sung by the Chapel Singers in yesterday morning's workshop.Today we head up to San Jose for the last concert of the trip. After that some of us head back to LA to visit ACDA in Pasadena. There we have another chance to hear Joe Modica's Bel Canto.
