Salzburg to Hannover

Here we are on our first tour of 2016, travelling by train from Salzburg to Munich and then on to Hannover. Last night saw us return to a favoured venue, the University Aula in Salzburg, and as ever the audience was appreciative and gracious.Jules tackled John McCabe’s wonderful tone poem, “Scenes in America Deserta,” for the first time yesterday. John passed away last February, sadly, and it was poignant indeed to perform his piece for the first time since his death. On joining the group, John’s music really opened my eyes to the incredible power of 20th century composition, a genre of which I was hitherto mostly unaware. He is hugely missed and although I am sad that we will no longer be able to commission him, I am grateful that we have so many examples of his work in our library. This evening we’ll join the Hannover Mädchenchor to rehearse more new music, to premier in our performances over the weekend. Our relationship with the choir is strengthening year by year, and we always enjoy the chance to sing with such talented young musicians. Hannover is the home of our German agents, so today will be something of a homecoming. A good start to a new year!
