Today we sing in L’estival de La Bâtie in the town of Saint-Galmier (perhaps best known as the source of Badoit mineral water). It is always such a pleasure to travel to these lovely summer festivals, and this is the first of three stops at various European festivals before we start our summer break. On Thursday we will perform at the Three Choirs Festival. This festival, which dates back more than 300 years, takes place each summer in either Hereford, Gloucester or Worcester. This year it is Worcester’s turn to host, and we will join with the Festival Director, Peter Nardone, to perform George Shearing’s wonderful Shakespeare Songs, in a programme inspired by the Bard himself, who was baptised 450 years ago (that’s the first official record of his life, but it is assumed he was pretty young when this happened!). On Friday we head to a rather younger, but no less distinguished, Festival. The Schleswig Holstein Music Festival has been in existence since 1986, and we have been there many times. One of the lovely aspects of this festival is that the concerts take place in the many towns and cities of Germany’s northern-most region, and so each event has a lovely local feel to it (and some great hospitality for the artists). After our three concerts we head to Lübeck to run a four-day workshop, which is always great, if rather hard work. I’ll be ready for the summer-break after all this.
