Riga, Latvia

Well, you have probably given up reading Thursday's edition of the KS blogs. I'm writing retrospectively because I wanted to make sure you knew I was still functioning! Sitting in my living room in Oxford has given me cause to reflect on the past fortnight. And what a fortnight! From Riga to Italy and back. We've sung in front of fantastic crowds, none more so than the 6000 people who came to the All Stars Concert at the World Choir Games in Riga, Latvia. If there was ever a 'pinch yourself' moment, it would have to be singing And So It Goes in front of all those people...an experience I'll never forget. We met and were inspired by Morten Lauridsen, a composer I have always admired, and for whom music and poetry are completely intertwined in their importance to each other. Hearing him talk of the people who gave him his chance and how much they meant to him was very moving. As well as hearing him speak, the opportunity to hear performances of some of his works by arguably the finest choir I have ever heard live, the Latvian chamber choir, Ave Sol, made for a truly wonderful experience. I think that 'life-changing' is a term that is thrown around, at times, too lightly so perhaps the best description of my experience is that I cannot remember the last time I was lost for words, a sentiment I shared with my colleagues. It was a timely reminder - if we ever needed one - of why we, in the music industry, do what we do. Sharing our love for singing and making music is the best thing we could ever achieve and I know that for the privileged people in Morten's session, we were all inspired to continue with that passion for bringing joy to people all around the world.

Leaving Riga after such a wonderful week was sad. Little did I know that we would be travelling through some of the most beautiful scenery in Italy, if not the world. The Dolomites, as many of you know, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and I urge you to visit them if you haven't already. I'm planning on heading back next year. Although the journey along the winding road made for a few squeamish moments, I was in the front so I was fine! My beautiful Samsung Galaxy S3 is on its last legs so enjoy the beauty from my pretty broken phone before it has a face lift next week. See you soon and enjoy the lovely weather!
