Pensacola, Florida

Quite a climate shift, this one. Yesterday morning we awoke at around 4am in the beautiful surroundings of Yellowknife, Canada, where the temperature was somewhat south of -40 degrees centigrade (plus wind-chill…) and, via a layover in Calgary and an overnight stop in Dallas, we find ourselves on the beach in Pensacola, Florida – and enjoying a balmy 20 degrees centigrade. I may even go for a run outside later on.Packing for this trip was undoubtedly not the easiest task, but I stuck to the old mantra of “layers, layers, layers” and it seems to have paid off. Sure, my suitcase is slightly heavier than usual, and I now have to cart several items around the US that I simply won’t wear again on this trip, but I survived the Northern Territories without frostbite, so who’s complaining? As my loyal readers will know, I like to keep you all abreast of our plans for 2018, and you’ll be pleased to know that these are proceeding nicely. We’ve pretty much nailed down the repertoire for our proposed 3-CD Anniversary Album, and now that we know the identity and vocal talents of David’s successor (Pat Dunachie) we’re able to hone this long list down to a refined snapshot of all that is good about The King’s Singers’ repertoire. Several people have been asking us how we go about this process, and it’s a good question: in truth, it’s taken a lot of meeting time, some flashes of inspiration, advice from colleagues past and present, as well as input from our management and agents, but in the end every piece on the list had to pass one simple test: do we enjoy singing it, and do our audiences enjoy listening to it? If the answer was even slightly in doubt, the piece in question didn’t make the list.As well as the recording, we’re planning a souvenir publication with an extremely eminent editor already signed up to curate the project; an online exhibition with pictorial and video archives, interviews, sound files and KS trivia, and of course some pretty intensive touring commitments. We’re aiming to hit at least five continents between September 2017-December 2018, and perform well in excess of 150 concerts, so the chances are we’ll be somewhere near to you! We’re honing our skills, beginning sound work with Pat in the near future as well as working with composers to ensure brand new commissioned works, and consulting with stylists to make sure we’re looking as sharp as possible for this important year. So, watch this space! There will be regular updates – including how YOU can contribute to the Anniversary Season, should you wish to become involved, and lots of special events to which you would all, of course, be invited. Above all it’s a celebration of music and singing, most specifically the legacy left to us by the founding members of this unique group, the sound that they first created, and the spell-binding effect it had on audiences the world over from 1968 onwards.
