We've already completed our first trip of the season, and are heading home for a brief stop before we travel to Reykjavik tomorrow. It has been great to be back on the road. Yesterday's drive from the beautiful town of Millstatt through the Austrian Alps towards Salzburg was as beautiful as ever. Last night we sang in Augsburg's St Moritzkirche, where German Renaissance composer Hans Leo Hassler served as organist (our programme included his Cantate Domino). The church has changed greatly since Hassler's time. In the 18th Century the church was remodelled in the Baroque style. In 1944 the church was badly bombed, requiring substantial renovation. In 2010 the interior was redesigned by John Pawson, resulting in a stunning space which feels modern, but enhances the ancient architecture of the building. There was a wonderful atmosphere during the concert. We have plenty more amazing performance spaces over the next months, including two great venues in Iceland this week - Reykjavik's Harpa Concert Hall, opened four years ago, and Skálholt Cathedral, which looks rather impressive in the photos! Add in Averbode Abbey, the Stadtkirche Bad Salzungen, and the Klosterbasilika Knechtsteden next weekend, and it's a pretty fine start to the season.
