Mayfield, UK

The first week of a new season always brings with it contrasting emotions: excitement at singing together again, anticipation of concerts, travel and experiences yet to be had, but also slight sadness at the thought of leaving home again - although of course the heightened emotion of returning once again always helps to make up for it!

This particular season is special because (as you ALL know!) we have a new tenor, Julian Gregory. Last night was his first concert, and I'm pleased to report that he did himself, and the KS, proud. He's a wonderful addition to the group and I'm looking forward to working with him for many years.

Today we head to Rochester Cathedral, the building where I started my musical career back in the '80s as a boy chorister. It's a wonderful place; although the surrounding areas are, perhaps, not particularly salubrious, Rochester itself is a bit of a gem, tucked away in the midst of the Medway Towns, and the Cathedral itself (dating back to AD604) is a charming building, full of hidden mysteries and wonderful architecture. Returning there will be a wonderful chance to remember those first few steps of my life as a singer, and I have the chance to catch up with Barry Ferguson, who was the Director of Music during my time at Rochester. We're premiering a composition he has written for the group, and it's rather fine, so that's something else to look forward to.

Over the course of the next 10 months we will sing on four continents, perform well over 100 concerts, and meet tens of thousands of people. I know we're all looking forward to it very much, and hope you're all able to join us on one of our concert days - do come and say hi!
