Lübeck, Germany

There is a lot of emotion in the air this week. Being guests at the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival is always a highlight of our year - amongst many other highlights. There's a feeling of belonging when you're at such a big festival, and every day brings sell-out concerts, warm sunshine and the renewal of friendships with long-time supporters of the KS. And all this following a visit to my favourite choral festival in the world - the Three Choirs Festival, this year held in Worcester. My parents sang as part of this festival in the 1970s, so it's always held a special place in my heart.

Here in Germany, the two concerts we've performed so far have been well-received and great fun. It's an uplifting way to end the season, and the real bonus is being able to stay in the same hotel for seven whole nights - that NEVER happens! Of course, it's bittersweet this time around as we're about to lose our friend and tenor colleague, Paul Phoenix, but we know he's happy and ready to take the next step in his life. It's a great way to go, too, enjoying a week in the sunshine in Lubeck rather than doing a one-off concert and heading straight home.

Julian Gregory has been here for the past few days, and for me it's a trip down memory lane to sing with him. When I was a bass choral scholar at St. John's College, Cambridge, Julian was starting out as an 8-year-old chorister, standing immediately in front of me! It makes me feel a bit old to have him join the KS, but it's great to see such energy, enthusiasm and musical intelligence about to join the group. Julian returned to St. John's as a choral scholar, so he and I have much to reminisce about. September brings a new, exciting chapter, and we're all ready to take out next step just as Paul takes his.

Have a wonderful summer, everyone - thanks for your support of the KS this past season, and we look forward to seeing many of you at a concert soon. Next season is full of great projects, recordings, concerts and media appearances (it's already nearly full!) so there will be plenty of chances to catch up with us on our travels.
