Italia!

This weekend we're visiting two of the most touristy cities in north-east Italy; Verona and Venice. I should imagine we'll be moving amongst the usual large seething body of tourists that regularly inhabits these two beautiful places, and yet our concerts will not be presented to them; instead, we will see the local people and I'm looking forward to experiencing the usual warmth from a partisan Italian crowd! Verona will see us perform as part of the 60th birthday celebrations of a local men's choir, the Coro Stella Alpina, so today I thought I'd write on the subject of community singing. As with sports, there's no reason why everybody and anybody can't make music on a regular basis, and our role as professionals isn't to discourage anyone from singing themselves, but rather to champion it as a worthwhile pastime. Although, in the case of the Coro Stella Alpina (and many others) that have been doing it longer than we have, perhaps it's us who should be inspired by them! Perhaps? No, definitely. For it's groups such as this, and the Dowlais Male Voice Choir in Wales (with whom we had the pleasure to sing last month) who are the beating heart of the choral community. There are many such women's groups too, of course. These groups provide a regular escape from everyday life, where the cares and troubles of each individual can be put to one side as they raise their voices in song. We have a friend in Australia who set up a choir specifically aimed at busy professionals in her city, and it's been thriving for years. People want a time and space provided for them, where they can let loose their inner voice without fear of ridicule, retribution or reprisal. I'm often surprised by the number of people who come to our concerts and say things such as "oh, well, of course I couldn't sing MYSELF!" Why not? Of course you could. It's a brilliant thing to do for your health, and it will allow you to meet other like-minded people, create works of art together, get the thrill of live performance to an audience, the fellowship of regular rehearsals (and parties!) and perhaps even meet someone special. Never mind dating websites - join a choir!
