Home, The UK

Yesterday was Thanksgiving, and with an American family I get to celebrate Turkey Day like a native - which means a large feast and the chance to collect the children early from school! It was great to have a warm-up for Christmas and welcome family and friends into our home. The serious side of this week is that we're resting ahead of our Christmas tour to the US and Canada. One of the questions we're asked most often is "how do you look after your voice?" and one answer is that we try to alternate periods of work and rest, in order to stay as fresh as possible. It's not always easy to turn work down, so we keep a fairly full diary, but before a long inter-continental tour it's imperative that we have a week at home to re-charge our batteries and spend time with our loved ones. It's also a good opportunity to grab a singing lesson, ensure you know all your notes, and continue with the seemingly never-ending process of administering what is an international business! So, I've managed to brush up on all the Christmas Carols that we're about to sing on tour, as well as conducting an interview earlier this week with Gordon Langford, one of the truly great arrangers in KS folklore. This is the man who arranged such favourites as our Flanders and Swann set, folksongs like "The lass of Richmond Hill" and "Blow away the morning dew" - and, for this time of year, "Jingle Bells" and "Deck the Hall." It was a fine experience to have an hour of his company and hear how he began writing for the group, back in the early 1970s, building up a relationship that really defined the sound of the embryonic King's Singers. Sadly, Gordon is in failing health these days, but he was still alert and interested enough to reminisce about his important part in the development of our sound. As we approach the back end of 2016, we wonder where the time has gone. It's been another great year of concerts, recordings and travel, and we hope that some of you will be able to join us to bring in the festive season with song!
