The Hilliard Ensemble

This weekend saw the final concert by one of the world's great vocal ensembles. After 41 years the Hilliard Ensemble have given their last performance in London's Wigmore Hall. The Hilliards have been at the forefront of early music performance, and have also championed the work of many contemporary composers, most notably Arvo Part. Their "Officium" recording with Jan Garbarek was groundbreaking, combining the ethereal beauty of music by masters such as Perotin and Dufay with the incredible improvisations of Garbarek's soprano saxophone. Whilst you may be unable to attend any more of their concerts, you will still be able to listen to their recordings, and their legacy lives on in the many ensembles they have inspired and coached over the years. We doff our caps to them all, but especially to their counter-tenor, David James, who has been in their line-up from the debut concert until their final show yesterday. That is amazing!photo credit: Marco Borggreve
