Henley-upon-Thames - United Kingdom

Today's concert is a private event in Henley, a fine old riverside town most famous as the home of the annual Royal Regatta. We're performing at the Phyllis Court Club, a private members' club on the riverbank itself, overlooking the finishing line for the many boat races that take place in this wonderful setting. It's one of those concerts where there is a real sense of occasion; black tie dinner, beautiful surroundings, and an attentive audience - many of whom knew of the group in its UK heyday, back in the 1970s and 1980s. As such, it's great to perform classic KS repertoire, such as a group of Victorian Part Songs, English Renaissance Madrigals (including the obligatory "Now is the month of Maying" by Thomas Morley) and an outing for "Masterpiece," our whimsical journey through the last 400 years of Western Classical Music (in around 9 minutes...). The first month of term has flown by, as it often does. My elder daughter enjoyed her last day of school today before the two-week Half Term break, and there is a real feeling (despite the unseasonally warm weather) that autumn is well and truly upon us, with Hallowe'en, Thanksgiving and Christmas just around the corner. We're looking forward to the first performance of a brand new programme, celebrating Psalms, in Dresden. These wonderful writings have inspired composers to write some of the finest music ever written, most especially during the Renaissance period. Following on from our "Sacred Bridges" recording of a few years ago, in which we brought together the three Monotheistic Religions with a shared emphasis on Psalms, we're taking listeners through various settings of Psalms of Praise, Thanksgiving and Hymn, including works by Palestrina, Hassler, Salmone Hebreo Rossi, William Byrd and Heinrich Schuetz. The setting couldn't be more perfect - the incredible Frauenkirche in the centre of Dresden's old city. Do come along if you can! Other than that, we have Julian's first memory Great American Songbook concerts in Finland next week, plus a look ahead to Christmas repertoire - with an eye to our next Christmas album, to be recorded in time for the 2016 season. It's all go at King's Singers HQ...
