Hannover Airport

It's rare that we can do a concert out of the UK, and still be home in our own beds the same evening. Today is one of those days. After an 11am concert in the Musikgymnasium at Schloss Belvedere on the outskirts of the beautiful city of Weimar we drove to Hannover to catch a flight home. This brings to a close a rather concentrated period of work which started on 12th September. Since then we have performed 23 concerts in Austria, Germany, Iceland, Belgium, Switzerland, England, Scotland, France, Norway, Sweden, Northern Ireland and Finland. We now have a bit of time at home before heading to Mexico and USA. The most recent patch of work started on Wednesday at the City of Derry International Choral Festival. It was my first visit to Derry, and it has to be one of the most friendly places in the world, and the reception at the concert, along with the following morning's warm-up with a large group of primary school singers, will be happy memories for a long time. Next we flew to Helsinki, connecting from one flight to another at Heathrow (a bit of a novelty for us, as we normally start or finish our journeys there). We sang on Friday night in Finlandia Hall, which marked my last performance with the KS in Finland. I mustn't dwell too much on these milestones too greatly, but I am getting a bit sentimental in my old age. Yesterday, as we drove in to Weimar from the autobahn I saw a hotel we stayed in back in the early 1990s. After the unification of the two parts of Germany, many people took the opportunity to start new businesses, and this hotel was one. When we visited it had been open for one week, and seeing it reminded me of that time. Weimar itself has changed quite a lot over the years, and the Musikgymnasium is housed in a great modern building in the grounds of Belvedere Castle. It has a lovely concert hall with a huge window behind the performers which looks out towards Weimar. It was particularly splendid with the autumn foliage. For the next few days I'm going to rest a bit, and get myself ready for the next trip away. Some of us have a couple of days in Mexico City to get over jet lag, and I hope to see a few sights (another rarity with our usual schedule). The other delight is that we should have some warm weather there and in California, which is welcome as things start to cool down at home.
