Halmstad, Sweden

Deja vu is an odd thing. I experienced it today, walking through the centre of Halmstad on the West Coast of Sweden this afternoon, where we have a show this evening. My first concert in Sweden - in fact, in all of the Nordic countries, was during my first month as a King’s Singer: in Linkõping, about an hour and a half southwest of Stockholm. I remember meeting our glorious agent for the Nordic countries, Karin, for the first time, and performing a programme that included my first attempt at Ligeti’s Nonsense Madrigals. My lasting memories were that the house was full and very welcome, that the people were all very friendly and beautiful, that the food was delicious (I think that might have been the occasion that sparked my lust after a Scandinavian kitchen), and that there were cyclists everywhere. My experience so far today has confirmed that these were all accurate first impressions - aside from the fact that I haven’t yet met this evening’s audience.

Tomorrow we fly back to Stockholm, only to drive about half an hour to Uppsala, Sweden’s fourth biggest city, to perform in the cathedral there - the largest in all of the Nordic countries. I’m then staying on in Stockholm for an extra day on Monday, to see friends and top up on Swedish air and culture, before flying on to Northern Ireland on Tuesday.

Much as I love travelling far and wide across the world, some of my favourite countries in the world are some of the closest to home. Sweden definitely ranks among them.
