En route from Salt Lake City

We're now on our way home from the US, this time with all six of us travelling together. It has been such a wonderful stay in Salt Lake City for so many reasons. As ever it has been such a joy to perform with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the Orchestra at Temple Square, under the direction of Mack Wilberg (and we've also loved singing his brilliant arrangements). In addition to the brilliant musicians, there are a huge number of people behind the scenes who make everything run like clockwork. The attention to detail is incredible, right down to the tiny printed name tags on each of our microphones (normally it's a piece of white tape with a number from 1 to 6. As well as thanking Mack, we'd like to thank Ryan Murphy (the choir's Assistant Director of Music) for his 'Primary Medley', a sequence of popular Mormon children's songs which we premiered at BYU in February. Having a standing ovation after it at both concerts from around 17,000 people was fantastic. I was also overwhelmed near the end of Saturday's concert by the kind words said by Lloyd Newell, the narrator at the Choir's weekly 'Music and the Spoken Word', marking my last US performance as a King's Singer. I was glad that I didn't have a solo line in the last piece, which followed immediately afterwards. Helping to add to the fun of the weekend was the presence of Pat, who'll be singing the first countertenor part from September, Steve Long, who runs Signum Records, Stephanie Reiss, our US manager, and Claire, our brilliant general manager. Last, but not least, I'd like to thank our good friend, Ron Gunnell, the special advisor to the Choir's President, Ron Jarrett. Ron G is the mastermind behind the guests at the Choir's major concerts, and he is one of the most gracious and generous hosts you could ever meet. Every time we visit Salt Lake, he treats us, amongst other things, to the vast Sunday Brunch buffet at the Grand America Hotel (attended by his lovely family). We're delighted that we get to see Ron very regularly as he loves visiting London. Apologies for the superlatives in this blog (I know they can be a feature of my blogs), but you'd understand if you'd been with us. Now we're heading to Germany, starting down on beautiful Lake Konstanz. I've got 8 more concerts to go as a King's Singer over the next two weeks, and I'm being kept on my toes, as no two programmes are the same. Looking on the bright side, I get one last chance to sing a lot of repertoire one more time.
