Conegliano, Italy

And it’s the Summer Term!I hope you’ve all enjoyed your Easters as much as we’ve enjoyed ours. For some of us, Easter included trips abroad. For me, it was the first break I’ve had during my five seasons in The King’s Singers when I’ve not gone abroad and, you know what, I really enjoyed it. London is a great city, and I often forget that, But more importantly this time, as I get older (and I’m basically geriatric now), more and more of my friends have moved to beautiful towns and villages in the countryside. Even though I live in a rural part of Sussex, I can still forget just how nourishing the countryside can be, particularly in the company of friends I see much less than I would like. This was the holiday of countryside walks, local ales, hearty puddings in front of fireplaces and Saturday night TV, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed myself. Now, we’re all in the bus driving from the airport in Venice to Conegliano, a beautiful Venetian town (I hope that’s the correct adjective for things in the Veneto region and not just for things from Venice) about an hour to the North. We’re going to be eating lunch en route today, surrounded by vineyards, overlooking Venetian hills, contemplating how delicious Italian food is and how glorious the weather is here (and it hasn’t been bad in London - it’s just that we’ve tipped over twenty degrees here today and it’s only going to get warmer as the week progresses). In honour of said fact, I’m wearing a linen shirt for the first time this year. If the weather continues like this, it certainly won’t be the last time either. The shirt, the food, the people and weather all in combination mean that I'm very much looking forward to our concert this evening in the Teatro Accademia di Conegliano, where we’ll also be performing with the acclaimed Conegliano Men’s Choir. Judging by the members I’ve met already, I think we’re going to have quite a lot of fun, particularly as we get to share dinner with them all after the concert. Thankfully, it’s just a leisurely drive down to Venice tomorrow lunchtime. Hereon in, it’s an extraordinary tour of some of Italy’s finest cities and concert halls over the course of ten days: Venice; Milan; Turin; Rome; Florence; and Genoa. Aside from all the pizza weight I’m likely to gain, I’m very excited about this amazing travel. We also get to launch our recording of Il Trionfo di Dori at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice on Monday, something we’ve been waiting for for a long time. Finally, I should really mention that two important King’s Singers birthdays happened this week: Jules turned 25 yesterday, and former tenor in the group and now world-famous composer and all round choral guru Bob Chilcott turned 60 on Thursday. Should you see either of them over the course of the next few days, why not wish them a happy birthday. I’m sure a huge smile will stretch across their faces in return.Right, we’ve arrived: lunchtime!
