Well, Christchurch was amazing! I can't express in words the feeling of being home and seeing my father again along with countless friends. The best way to describe it is wonderfully overwhelming! The warmth of the audience at The Aurora Performing Arts Centre at Burnside High School was incredible and something I will never forget. What a homecoming!
In contrast, the city in its current state is very different to the pre-earthquake version of Christchurch. I spent last Monday walking around the CBD with Dad and remember, vividly, standing on street corners and, despite being able to read the street signs, being completely disorientated with where I was because of the, in some cases, lack of ANY noticeable landmark. There are entire city blocks that are flat and are now being used as a carpark. It's crazy. I don't know how the Cantabrians do it. It's desperately sad.
I, like many people who have lived in or visited Christchurch have wishes for it to just return to the way it was and for life to just go on as we knew it. That's not possible. The way forward is probably a mix of forward-thinking, eco-friendly, sustainable, recyclable, modern architecture with a glance back at Christchurch's heritage. The earthquakes will never go away and so there's no use building the city up again with the same bricks and mortar that couldn't survive the earthquakes in the first instance. It's not often a city has the chance to reinvent itself so, like many others, I will watch with interest to see how the city grows again. I'll try not to lose my memories and the innovative initiatives happening in and around Christchurch give me hope that it will one day be a wonderful destination for travellers and also a wonderful place to grow up for the generations to come.
