It's lovely to wake up in Cambridge University again for the first time in three years for me, since I graduated from St John's in 2012. The sun is shining, the various Greens, Commons and Pieces are bustling with flowers and cyclists, and the feeling around town is a happy one, since most of the students have within the last week or so, finished their exams for the year -- or for the last time ever as finalists! It all brings back a strong feeling of nostalgia to me, which makes me appreciate even more my time since leaving Cambridge, both as a graduate student in Germany and London, and now in The King's Singers. It was particularly nice to go to evensong at St John's last night (straight after our afternoon of rehearsing) and hear the choir again, which I'd been a part of for five years as a boy, and then for a further three years as an undergraduate student. The internationally reputed, golden quality of the choir's sound is second to none (IMO!) and they were certainly on great form last night, as Chris G and Chris B, who were also there, will testify. It was really magical to once again sink into that warm sound world of theirs and re-stoke a little of those Johnian embers which lie deep within my core and upbringing.Looking forward to rehearsing this afternoon in Sidney Sussex Chapel, and polishing up some of the musically interpretative aspects of our Palestrina programme for tonight's concert. Lots of great imagery within the Latin texts, including some to do with wildlife, kings, the human senses and the female form!Happy Wednesday!
