Back home

It has been a wonderful weekend, spent in the German city of Hanover. We arrived late on Friday night after a slow drive from Berlin, where we’d landed after our flight from Madrid. However things perked up on Saturday when we spent a few hours rehearsing with the Mädchenchor Hannover (Hanover Girls’ Choir) for our joint concert on Sunday. The majority of the time was spent on a brand new work written for the KS and the choir by Francis Pott. This beautiful piece, entitled Hands across the Darkness, sets poetry by Charles Bennett. It was commissioned to mark the 300th anniversary of the House of Hanover to the British throne with the accession in 1714 of George the First. Francis was also mindful of the 100th anniversary of the start of the Great War, and the text tells of humankind’s yearning for peace. To premiere this work on Remembrance Sunday, the day we Brits honour our fallen service men and women, was very moving. Added to this was yesterday’s 25th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall, which added to the remarkable atmosphere of the entire concert. The other delight was the fantastic singing of the girls’ choir, under their inspirational director Gudrun Schröfel. I hope we will have the opportunity to perform Hands across the Darkness on many more occasions.I’m now back home for a couple of night before heading to Italy for concerts in Erba and Verona. It’s not a bad life!
